Ram Navami is one of the most sacred occasions in the Hindu calendar — and Ayodhya is the place to experience it. As the birthplace of Prabhu Shri Ram, Ayodhya transforms during Ram Navami into a city of extraordinary devotion, with special aartis, processions, and darshan at the newly consecrated Ram Mandir. Millions of pilgrims arrive for the celebrations, and accommodation books out weeks in advance.

This guide covers everything you need to know to plan your Ram Navami visit to Ayodhya: when the festival falls, how accommodation works during this period, darshan logistics, and why proximity to Ram Mandir is the single most important factor in your stay.

When is Ram Navami?

Ram Navami falls on the ninth day of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of the month of Chaitra in the Hindu lunar calendar. This corresponds to March or April in the Gregorian calendar, with the exact date shifting each year. In 2025, Ram Navami falls on April 6. In 2026, it will fall in late March or early April.

The festival celebrates the birth of Prabhu Shri Ram at the moment of Abhijit Muhurta — typically around noon on Ram Navami day. At Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, this moment is marked by special worship and is considered among the most auspicious darshan opportunities of the entire year.

Most pilgrims plan to arrive 1–2 days before Ram Navami day to avoid the heaviest crowds, and to ensure they can attend multiple events during the celebration period.

What Happens in Ayodhya During Ram Navami?

For pilgrims arriving for the first time during Ram Navami, here is what to expect:

Extended darshan hours: Ram Mandir typically extends darshan hours significantly during Ram Navami to accommodate the volume of pilgrims. Morning darshan may begin as early as 3–4 AM.

Special puja and aarti: The morning Pratah Aarti and the noon Abhijit Puja are the most significant ceremonies. These attract enormous crowds. The evening Sandhya Aarti is also special during Ram Navami week.

Processions: Shobha Yatras (processions) are taken out through the city streets on Ram Navami and the preceding days. These are vibrant, loud, and deeply devotional — expect the roads to be crowded.

Prasad distribution: Large-scale prasad is distributed at various points around the city. Pilgrims typically join these queues as part of the experience.

Crowd density: On Ram Navami day itself, the area around Ram Mandir can be extremely dense. Having accommodation within walking distance means you can visit early in the morning before the peak crowds arrive, return to rest, and go back in the evening.

The Accommodation Challenge During Ram Navami

Ayodhya’s accommodation infrastructure, while growing rapidly since 2024, is still stretched during major festival periods. During Ram Navami, here is the reality:

Hotels near Ram Mandir: Most charge 3–5 times their regular tariff during Ram Navami. A room that costs ₹2,000 on a regular night may be priced at ₹6,000–₹10,000 during the festival. This is standard practice for commercial hotels.

Dharmashalas with fixed tariffs: Trust-managed dharmashalas like Birla Dharmashala do not engage in festival-season pricing. The tariff during Ram Navami is identical to the tariff in October. This is not a promotional offer — it is the philosophy of the institution.

Availability window: Regardless of price, rooms within 2 km of Ram Mandir during Ram Navami are exhausted weeks in advance. Pilgrims who contact us in the week before Ram Navami rarely find availability. This is why advance booking is so critical.

Why Location Matters Most During Ram Navami

During Ram Navami, vehicle movement near Ram Mandir is severely restricted. The roads around the temple complex are closed to traffic for significant periods, particularly on the main day of celebration. This creates a situation where:

  • Auto-rickshaws cannot access the immediate vicinity of the temple
  • Traffic jams extend for several kilometres in all directions
  • Walking is the only reliable way to reach Ram Mandir during the festival

If your accommodation is 500m–1,200m from Ram Mandir (like Birla Dharmashala at 1,200m), you simply walk. You are completely independent of the traffic situation.

If your accommodation is 5–6 km away, reaching the temple during Ram Navami may require 45–60 minutes of travel each way, depending on traffic and auto availability. On Ram Navami day itself, it may be effectively impossible to reach the temple in reasonable time from a distant location.

This is why seasoned pilgrims who have attended Ram Navami multiple times consistently emphasise: book the closest available accommodation, even if it means a smaller room.

Birla Dharmashala for Ram Navami: What You Need to Know

  • Dormitory Bed: ₹350/bed/night
  • Non-AC rooms: ₹1,250–₹2,250/night
  • AC rooms: ₹1,650–₹2,550/night

  • Family Room: ₹3,850/night

All prices include breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

24-hour reception: Many pilgrims arrive in Ayodhya on overnight trains that reach the station in the early morning hours of Ram Navami. Birla Dharmashala’s reception is staffed round-the-clock. Pilgrims arriving at 2 AM on Ram Navami day can check in immediately.

Secure lockers: During Ram Navami, crowds at the temple are dense and movement is unpredictable. Birla Dharmashala provides secure lockers where guests can store valuables before heading to the temple, without the anxiety of carrying irreplaceable items in a festival crowd.

All meals included: Finding a good vegetarian restaurant during Ram Navami can be challenging — restaurants are overflowing, queues are long, and the quality and hygiene of street food stalls during festival crowds is unpredictable. At Birla Dharmashala, your three sattvic meals are prepared fresh and served at set times throughout the day. This removes one significant source of stress from your pilgrimage.

Booking Timeline for Ram Navami

This is the critical information most pilgrims do not act on early enough:

Time Before Ram NavamiAction
8–10 weeks beforeConfirm your travel dates. Decide on room type.
6–8 weeks beforeContact Birla Dharmashala. This is the ideal booking window.
4 weeks beforeStill possible to get some room types. Act immediately.
2 weeks beforeVery limited availability. Dormitory beds may still be open.
1 week beforeAlmost certainly sold out for walking-distance properties.

The lesson: treat Ram Navami accommodation like a train ticket — book as soon as your dates are firm, not as an afterthought.

Practical Darshan Tips for Ram Navami at Ram Mandir Ayodhya

For pilgrims attending Ram Mandir darshan during Ram Navami:

Arrive very early: The queues begin forming before sunrise. To experience a relatively uncrowded darshan, try to reach the queue by 4–5 AM. By 7–8 AM, the queues are long.

Wear comfortable footwear: Footwear is removed before entering the temple complex. Bring a cloth bag to carry your footwear or use the cloak-room facilities.

Carry minimal belongings: The crowd density on Ram Navami day makes carrying a large bag or backpack inconvenient and potentially unsafe. Carry only what you need — a water bottle, a small bag with ID, and your phone.

Plan for multiple shorter visits: Rather than standing in one long queue for several hours, consider visiting at 5 AM (quiet), returning to your room for breakfast and rest, going back around 11 AM (for the Abhijit Muhurta Puja), and returning again in the evening for Sandhya Aarti. This is only possible if you are staying close to the temple.

Stay hydrated: Ram Navami in Ayodhya falls in April, during the Indian summer. Temperatures can be 35–40°C during the day. Carry a refillable water bottle.
