What to Pack for Your Ayodhya Pilgrimage

A pilgrimage is both a physical journey and an inner one. The better you prepare for the outer journey, the more freely your mind can rest in devotion. Here is a complete checklist for your Ayodhya yatra.

Documents & Identity

  • Government-issued photo ID (Aadhaar, Passport, Voter ID) — mandatory at Ram Mandir security
  • Accommodation booking confirmation
  • Emergency contact numbers (written, not just stored in phone)
  • Travel insurance documents if applicable

Clothing

Ayodhya is a place of deep spiritual significance. Dress modestly and simply.

  • Sarees / Salwar Kameez for women — traditional and respectful
  • Kurta-Pyjama / Dhoti-Kurta for men — preferred attire for darshan
  • 3–4 sets for a multi-day visit
  • Light shawl or dupatta for cooler evenings and entering temple premises
  • Comfortable sandals or chappals — easy to remove and carry at temple entrances
  • Socks for walking on marble (temple flooring can be hot in summer)

Toiletries & Hygiene

  • Travel-size toiletries to keep luggage light
  • Hand sanitiser — queues can be long and handwashing facilities limited
  • Personal towel
  • Basic first-aid kit: bandages, antiseptic, ORS packets
  • Any personal medications with prescriptions

Spiritual Essentials

  • Small pocket-sized Ramcharitmanas or Hanuman Chalisa
  • A simple cotton jhola (cloth bag) for carrying prasad
  • Flowers, coconut, or other simple offerings as permitted by the temple
  • Rudraksha mala if you practise japa

Practical Items

  • Powerbank — mobile charging facilities may not be available while waiting in queues
  • Reusable water bottle — stay hydrated, especially in summer
  • Light snacks (dry fruits, chikki, biscuits) for long queue waits
  • Small denomination cash — many offerings and local vendors are cash-only
  • Lightweight umbrella or cap — Ayodhya’s sun can be intense from March to October

What NOT to Carry

  • Leather items (belts, wallets, handbags) — not permitted in some temple areas
  • Tobacco or alcohol
  • Non-vegetarian food
  • Electronic devices inside the main sanctum (cameras, smartwatches may be restricted)
